History:

At the end of 1998 and early 1999 an electronic debate regarding the feasibility and the appropriateness of a system of co-operation amongst those with an interest in the relationship between Economics and the Environment in southern Africa were held.

From the ensuing debate it become increasing clear that a degree of co-operation amongst individuals in the field is necessary.

A meeting was consequently held on the 4th of June 1999 at the Development Bank of Southern Africa to discuss the issue. All the people on the afreco-net@groa.uct.ac.za list server were invited and information regarding the meeting was disseminated using the websites of various institutions. Approximately 70 people attended the workshop.

The meeting resolved that a loosely organised Forum should be established, pioneered by what is called a Group of Enthusiasts. Subsequently various electronic circulars have been distributed and the free flow of information in the subject matter been promoted.

The minutes of the meeting held can be accessed here.
